aux tank hook up, not gravity

Evening gents, I just bought a toolbox fuel tank combo. It needs some paint but I should not have to re fuel for a month or so. My question to every one here is, how would you hook up a third tank? I got a set of valves to interrupt the stock fuel flow. They accept 3 lines and out to one. So that seems to make sense. According to the guy, you mount the switch under the drivers seat and can switch on the fly. There is one for supply and a second for return. So I guess run it till it sputters and flip the switches? I would like it to automatically fill the stock midship tank. But the hook UPS are on top. So gravity feed is out. And I'm looking at pumps. Any one have any definitive way of doing this? I mainly want to be able to see how full my tank is from the dash. Hence using the stock tank. And the gauge reads very slowly so I'm scared to simply use the stock gauge to guess when to shut the pump off. Also don't want to forget and pour diesel down the highway. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks

Well, I did some of that. My tank I use a plastic fuel line down into the big rubber fill tube. I did the vent mod first getting rid of the inner fuel line and ran a separate vent. I just barely penetrate the big rubber fuel tube and used marine tex around it to seal it. I bought a small fuel pump at O'Reily's to pump the fuel. I put a solenoid normally closed in the line and a toggle switch inside. I have a toggle switch inside for the pump. The small pump will fill the tank barely faster then I use the fuel. I can just open the solenoid and let it gravity feed also, but when I shut the motor off, it shuts the solenoid valve off. I don't have a gauge on the aux tank but I've used it for years now so I know how to guess how full it is. When I fill up and take off I'll use the first half of the rear tank then switch to the front tank. That half is my security blanket, LOL. When the front tank is at half I'll flip on the pump and when the gauge shows full I'll turn it off. When its down to half again I'll turn the pump on again and when its at full my 40 gallon aux tank is almost empty.

tjc, i love the simplicity, my concerns are that i have no equipment to fuel, and arn't those pumps around $400?

i'm looking at this little guy, or similar Buy Mr. Gasket Electric Diesel Fuel Transfer Pump 12D at Advance Auto Parts

glenn, i'm digging your set up. on an empty main tank i could drive to rockford before overfilling main with that little green guy. 35GPHour is not as fast as i was thinking and $62 is much more reasonable. it does get some bad reviews, but maybe with no load it'll hold up longer.

Where can i look, what do i search for to find a fuel level gauge for the 2" hole on this tank? even if it just reads at the tank?

thanks guys

That's the pump I got! That little guy works good, I wonder why it got bad reviews? I don't know about a gauge, at times I wish I had one.

Transferflow traxx II my dad has this in his 03. it constantly measures the level in his oem fuel tank and the aux tank. when the oem tank gets low it automagicly turns on an electric pump in the aux tank to keep the main tank full. it has an LCD display that keeps track of how many gallons are in both tanks. I dig it. they also make giant sized replacement tanks but they don't have any that fit OBS style trucks.

retail, yes.
the one i use in the 88 around 20 years old and and is only 12 GPM. back then i paid around $150 for it.

new on ebay is still $149 for this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pentagon-Tools-Pump-Force-20-GPM-12-Volt-Fuel-Transfer-Pump-For-Diesel-or-Gas-/370681224474?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item564e529d1athis is also a pretty good pump, i know a few people with it and have no problems at all.

^haha^

i just assumed i'd have to stop to pee before i could burn 20 gallons. i'm not sold on having a rolling diesel station. but still don't want to be on high alert for fuel in strange places. hence the tool box combo. it hides by being no taller than the bed rails, and the hook ups have a decent little cover that would really only keep bird stuff off them.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mr-Gasket-12D-Electric-Diesel-Fuel-Transfer-Pump-/130918694360?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1e7b5cbdd8&vxp=mtr - $43 plus some tubing. i just read the reviews at advance. most seemed to be misusing it. and there was a guy in the idi section who used one for a lift pump lasted over a year. 250hdxlt i think he was. that was building pressure and working the whole time the truck was running.

ken_c That would be awesome but i need money left over to fill these tanks.

glenn how long did yours last?

edit: after some researching fuel level indicators. a stick seems to be my preferred option.

21411, maybe you can find that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! LOL

My first one lasted about three years. I'm on my second year on this one.

I like that, make room for air tank underneath.

Glenn I'd settle for getting that puddle of diesel back!

haha, when I first installed mine, the next morning I was greeted with a puddle of diesel under the pickup. It gravity feed and I wasn't thinking, LOL. I installed a manuel shut off but on the road when I wanted to use the fuel I had to stop and open the valve. Then after stopping I sometimes would forget to close it, Then I found out about the 12v solenoid thats normally closed until you give it 12v. Took care of that problem!
