My 1986 Ranger 2.9L V6 Automatic shuts off when it gets hot. Driving down the road it just shuts off. Wait 20-30 min. & it restarts. I've replaced IAC, O2 sensor, fuel filters, ignition module, etc. Still does it. Any suggestions?
I had it in the shop & they ran every code test. I also ran my own with my code sensor. Problem is I never have the code sensor with me when it happens. I've replaced plugs, wires, cap & rotor, fuel filters, checked fuel pump and all are good. Someone mentiioned an ECT? I don't know what that is but apparently it sends temp readings to the computer.
In highschool, I had an old 86 Ranger 4banger with the same problem. I changed out the engine computer and it fixed it. The guy at the junk yard said they were hard to keep because they had this problem on alot of the mid-80's rangers
Thanks. I'll check it out. What a pain. It's 115 degrees here in the afternoon and when it shuts off it's always 5 miles from town. Gotta do something.
