79 F150 Build thread

So, I've been doing some thinking, plotting, and planning.

Decided to put a build thread up, just so I have documentation of my thought processes, and maybe even some external input

What I have right now is:

A 1979 f150 4x4 pickup... more or less.

I rebuilt my engine (300 inline 6) a while ago, and after putting it back in, forgot to make sure my brakes were working properly. 1 instance of environmental braking later, I have a massively squished passenger side door.

I acquired a 1978 f150 2wd as a donor body. I figure that gives me a good place to finish... once I've done everything else I want to do while I have the body off.

I know there will be a couple of minor details to take care of, when the time comes to re-unite body and frame... such as cutting out the floor pan for a manual transmission. And keeping my brake pedal linkage, rather than the older style.

While I have the body pulled, I have removed the transmission (np435) and transfer case (np205).

These are my main focus at this point. Full rebuild kits for each, a couple of new gears in the transmission, and replacement shift forks. I'm also planning to do a twin-stick conversion for the transfer case.

I would like to set up turning brakes so that I can lock a wheel, put it in front wheel drive, and pivot. Never done it, but it seems like it should work well, and possibly reduce the huge turning radius to something a bit more manageable. This will involve re-plumbing the entire brake system, which is ok with me, as faulty brakes have got me into the current situation.

I'm also planning to sandblast and re-(paint? rhinoline?) the frame.

Currently debating between a 4" and 6" lift as well... probably skyjacker, no blocks involved.

High-steer? I think I may have to invest in some flat-top knuckles as well. It will get the tie rod out of the way a bit, and reduce the geometry compensation needed due to the lift.

New steering box while I'm at it, I've traced a lot of the slop in my steering down to that... probably get one from red-head, unless I hear a better idea.

Also, I believe the wiring harness has to go. That'll be completely re-done as well. I'm a bit tired of chasing random electrical faults, and as an old farm truck, this thing has it's share of loose wires that may or may not have ever done anything.

Am I missing anything here?

At this point, I welcome all questions, thoughts, debates, and insults.

Looking forward to seeing the work! What engine does the donor truck have?

Looking foward to seeing it. Be sure to take lots of pics. Be organized, and bag and tag all bolts and nuts.

The donor truck has no drive train. Just going to use the new body on the old frame. I believe everything will line up... except the floor shifters, but a bit of time, and careful cutting should resolve that.

Bag and tag is the only way

Do our trucks use double flared lines or? Anyone know?
