Check out the article. Suggest you call this to the attention of the SA:

DTS Articles - Diesel Particulate Filters

Also you can print my photo of the tail pipes from the other thread I posted it on.

Thank you.
Do you or anyone else know if there is a particular test they can do on the dpf to determine if it is faulty/cracked or not?
I have a feeling they are goin to keep my truck all day then call me and say everything is fine. Just want to know if there might be any sort of test I could ask for, if there is one.
Thanks,
Dave

Lol! Thought there might be a more technical test, but I guess that'll work.
Thanks

Well I just did the white towel test. Had my son get the rpm's up to 3k while I held a white towel up to the exhaust...covered with a fine mist of black soot, plus it smelled like diesel.
Now I've just got to convince the Ford dealer that its NOT normal

i provided the dealer test for a cracked dpf in my prior post. if the dealer says know ask they to provide you a copy of the hotline contact that is dening your claim.
this one is a pretty easy no brainer

i dont recall the exact milage but belive i have stated in another thread prior
Thanks. I noticed you are a Ford master mechanic...is the test they do in the shop or do they have a more sophisticated apparatice that can tell if its cracked? Because I did the 3k test this morning and I saw a little smoke...should there be none?
Thanks for your help.

Well, things went about how I expected at the dealer for service today. Told the SA that I had soot on the inside of my tail pipe and have not notice a regen since ive had it (about 3 weeks) and asked if they could check the dpf for a crack. After a few hours he called me back (with a bit of excitement in his voice) and told me that they got it all figured out. He said there was an update to the computer and it should take care of the soot issue. They also told me that they could tell (from the computer) that the truck had regened before, they just didn't know exactly when.
I'm pretty bummed because I don't need you guys to tell me that a computer update won't fix the problem. I even showed him the documentation that another user provided me with earlier in this thread. I have a feeling that they don't like for customers to come in and tell them what they need to do.
I guess I'll just clean the exhaust really good and when it gets covered in soot again I'll take it back and tell them that the computer update didn't solve the problem...try again.

Thanks for the help and advise everyone.
I really appreciate it. I'll post any new info that may arise from this situation.
Dave

actually that would be Fords recommended first step...pointless but that is what ford would tell them to do.

i disagree with that statement.
part of the diag chain for exhaust system is the run up test looking for smoke from the pipe. when that is found file for prior approval on fmc dealer and repolace dpf as well as update pcm.
this seems more like either lazy or 126 issues

So both the update and replacement at the same time? Makes more sense.

I would love to go in there and tell them this, but unfortunately, they will most likely, not take kindly to me telling them how to do their job. As a Master mechanic you are probably already aware of this though.
I think I'll just leave it as is now, and when the exhaust gets soot all over it again, I'll bring it back in. Unfortunately, it seems like thats my only choice now. On a lighter note...the truck runs great

By the way, when I mentioned cracked dpf, he immediately told me that there would be a code for that/the service engine light would come on. I didn't really know what to say to that?
