Door locks?

I just stripped the door latches off my 1950 F1 and noticed the only way I can lock the vehicle is from the passengers door? Could anybody shed some light on why this is? Or is it just mine that's like this?

Back in that time the roads were narrow and there were few parking lots so people were force to park on the edges of the roads - The vehicles were designed so that the drivers side doors were locked from the inside and the driver would slide to the passenger side to get out and then lock the door.
CAUTION: The inside door locks and the key locks are two seperate systems - If you lock the door using the inside handle, pushing down on the handle and closing the door, you will not be able to unlock it with the key - When you get things back together roll your windows down and and check it out

Your oh so right. I can remember being locked out of my truck on numerous occasions. Recently I completed the rebuilding of my door latches, window regulators and putting my windows in. I was demonstrating the ease with which one can be locked out of these trucks to my wife. I pulled up the handle, slammed the door and went to try to open..lo and behold it opened. I do not know how but in rebuilding the latch every time I shut the drivers side door the handle drops and saves me from having to break back in. The passenger side work as designed. With all the one step backs I have encountered with this truck what a pleasant surprise this has been.
