Barely made it home....

Today I took the 54 out for a drive about 15 miles to neiboring town to deliver some bricks. Note to self:
Self. old Y blocks and truck 4 speed trans do not like driving 70 mph AT ALL!!!
Kinda over heated.....on way home I realized that I have neglected the old girl for too long, Took the wife out to dinner and let her know I should probably rebuild it. I have had the hand me-down-motor for 14 years with only a fuel pump as NEEDING replaced. She agreed so it looks like when I'm well enough I'll be rebuilding the motor first. Of course my youngest son @ 15 as my assistant and helper. I will really look forward to the build. Now to just get better and get on with it. Yes I will keep posted with pictures.

Would be interesting to know your gearing and tire size to see what that Y block was turning at that speed. They are an interesting engine to rebuild, a great father / son project.

I think you need a new muffler too. The old girl had to be screaming at you doing 70 !! What engine are you running

John Mummert is a local guy who is pretty much the world's guru on the Ford Y Block engine. Take a look at his website FORD Y before you get too far along with your rebuild. As raytasch indicated in his post, the Y block is "interesting"...there are many unique "features" of this engine that should be learned by anyone who wants a quality build.

Make sure the machine shop takes cards. It soo much easier to swipe the debit card. When you physically write a check for that large amount of money, it gets painfull.

And as an afterthought, consider upgrading to a later Y block if you still have the 239 CID powerplant. Your flexibility with parts and options are greater.

Me too. There is no reason your Y-block couldn't go 70 IF the engine/cooling system/brakes are in good shape.
IMO we baby these old engines way too much.......3k rpm shouldn't hurt them at all.

Glad to see you are keeping the Y and not swapping it out.

Alas I do not have a tach as you all guessed, but tire sizes are mixed P215/75R15 in front and P265/70R15 in rear. I do like the rake but this is a little much. The single exhaust and glass pack were not that loud but then again I love glass pack sound and I wear a hearing aide . Don't get me wrong I would not WANT to drive it faster but when accelerating from red light onto freeway RPM's get higher.
Carb also had the problem I mentioned in earlier post so while I was buying the starting fluid because it had sat for a while I also bought carb dip and rebuild kit. I have to have 2bb working correct even if I am getting tri-power up and running. I also have some 4bbl manifolds for the 292 and I will get a carb system working for that too. no need to have manifold that doesn't have working carb.
As for braking system I have in the last 3 yrs replace/rebuilt everything but the hardlines and the brakes do work as originally designed albeit not as good as modern options. But those are subject ti upgrades.

I have a 312 Y in my 56 Fairlane. Rebuilt by me a couple years ago. Not too difficult but there are a few things to watch. Turns about 3000 RPM at 75 so that is what I run on the freeway. Drove down to Midnite at the Oasis in Yuma in march, about 250 miles each way. Engine did just fine. I really don't like being on the freeway but sometimes have no choice, I have never had a problem with it.
