I recently purchased a 2006 Ford F-150 with a 4.6L motor in it. It has a whine which changes with the rpm. I tool the belt off and the noise disappeared. So I know it is external. The problem is, I have no way to test which external accessory is causing the problem. Most likely, it is the ribbed idler pulley near the power steering. Is there any way to test this? My hope is everyone will say "It's the idler pulley" but I don't want to replace everything the belt touches. Maybe someone will give me a definitive way either to check it or simply say "Those go out in every 4.6L.".
It is not hurting anything the way it is and I would imagine I could go "forever" with it this way, but it is covering up my exhaust sound, and we all know we want to hear that deep bass sound at idle! And not a whiny pulley noise.
Well, in case anyone else is having the same issue as I, the bad part ended up being the pulley on the belt tensioner. Sounds great now. Paid $17 for a pulley and now no more noise.
