Well one reason I'm not painting it with real paint with a spray gun is because I don't have an air compressor any more. Mine is shot so I was just gunna improvise and rattle can it.
After I rattle can it, should I wet sand it or no?
I painted my whole truck with rustoleum rattle cans, their QC is really good and all my color seemed to look the same. I don't think you would notice a difference in color unless you didn't paint evenly or didn't prep correctly. I would NOT wet sand rattle canned paint. Chances are you will not be able to bake the vehicle and that paint will remain fairly soft for several days. Even with a high grit sand paper I think you would damage the finish more than you would help it. I tried it and then stopped really quick because it was doing more harm than good. This was with rustoleum, so maybe a different brand paint would react differently. For sure you should sand down the old paint before shooting a primer.
My junk is rattle canned too, Krylon's "rust tough" enamel semi-flat black (part #9203), i buy it from Napa when they have it 50% off ($2.48 a can).
When dry it has a satin finish to it, i think i have a total of $36 into it at date....i hate doing bodywork so that's last on my list, so the semi-flat black masks a lot of flaws in the mean time.
It passes the "20/20 test", looks good from 20 feet away while going 20 mph.
I painted this truck with rattle cans, and aside from the hood you can't really tell. I painted the hood on the truck, so it never did lay down right, but I didn't care. I had about 4 cans of blue and 4 white in it.
BTW boys I found this site and ordered a can for my truck.
You can match your paint codes and they have a couple of choices.
But, they require a clear coat.
The one I got is pretty damn close so I'm going to order a bit more if I can't find a single stage match..
Still lookin'.
Maybe it'll look better without clear.
I don't know shiite about paint.

Alright cool. I was planning on using rustoleum. When you say the paint will be soft do you mean like spray paint sticky? What can I do to make the paint hard?

Well I'm thinking of using a white because it kinda makes it hard to see flaws, unlike black it will bring out every single flaw in your body work. I would be very pleased with a 100% on the 20/20 test but it will be covered in mud and dirt and dust so I think it might pass the 15/15! HAHA

I will probably take a few panels off and paint them off of the truck so I can get a good spray on them. I'm gunna separate the bed too because there are a few rust pinholes that need to be fixed on the front of the bed. Since that took a total of 8 cans how many coats are on it?

When you paint a car, doesn't matter if its good quality paint or cheap a$$ paint, you need to let the paint cure, within 24 hours the paint will be dry to the touch but still wet on the deep layers, you usually have to wait about 2 weeks before you do anything to it, which includes wet sanding.
We painted this one using Rustoleum about 5ish years ago, 2 layers of primer, 3 layers of yellow (Rustoleum used in farm equipment mixed with a bit of white) and 3 layers of Rustoleum Automotive clear coat. Even though the top of the truck faded a bit, it still doesn't look that bad, especially since the truck broke down 3 years ago and its been sitting there since then .
Anything means anything. No washing, waxing, buffing, wet sanding, kissing, etc. Just let it sit. Time got away from me and mine sat for about a year. It was rock hard by then, but it takes a while to get it to cure up. Realistically, several weeks or a month should be good.
Pros will usually bake a car in a giant dry oven before they start to wet sand or anything. If you just shoot primer, base and clear it will look good. Sure the paint wont be a smooth as glass, but why would you care? haha

I like the looks of that! Did you primer over the existing paint job then add the black? Any sanding or anything?
Also, are those tires 35s? BFGoodrich. 16.5s? Nice looking.

Thanks!
No primer, I just scuffed up the factory paint with some 220 grit and spray bombed it with the black....it still needs body work so I just wanted something cheap and easy until then.
