Transmission compatibility amongst engines

So I've found a couple of C6 transmissions on craigslist, one a recent rebuild that is close by. I have a 390 in my 74 (though it is not a truck 390 but a 67 Fairlane 390). Which engines would I need to look for (and years) that would have a compatible bell housing?

Thanks!

Any transmission with the FE series bell housing bolt pattern will bolt up. It won't matter if its from a truck or car.

so basically, as it applies to our trucks, just the 390 or 360 engine. Damn. that could be harder to find...

If your needing a 2wd transmission then you don't have to narrow your search to trucks specifically.

So is the C6 different for a 2WD versus a 4WD?

Unless your 74 is an F250, then the transmissions are different between 4x4s and 2x4s

so if the donor truck is a 4WD but is an F250, the transmission would work in my F100 2WD?

To the OP, hold on, I have a question for these other folks.... I've never had a highboy, do they have a slip yoke on the output shaft???

"Highboys" have a fixed yoke on the transmission. If the F250 has a divorced mount transfer case, then you can use it on your 2wd 74.

Driveshaft modification may be needed.

The transmission you need isn't too hard to find, its just a regular C6 transmission, nothing like what is posted below, that is Highboy specific. You just need to look for one with a FE bell housing.

Highboys have a specific transmission when your talking about the C6. You can't just use a regular 2wd transmission (well you can, I did but you need to mod the T-Case lever thingy), the C6's that were in the Highboys originally have a different tail shaft. that tail shaft have a hole in it for the T-Case lever. These are very very hard to find.

Here is a pic of the different bell housings.

One more question - i just called a guy about 30 miles away. He has a good running C6 behind a blown 390, in a 1975 F100 (I think it's a 75 - Mfr. date says July 1975), but for some reason, he's telling me there's a floor shifter. Would there be any issue buying a C6 that has the floor shifter? Is just the linkage different, so I could use mine?

Probably what he is talking about is that he doesn't have all the little linkages and such but if you have a C6 already you can just use the ones off of your transmission.

the previous owner had done a hack job and converted to floor shift. It's a Ranger XLT F100, 2WD, 390. I guess it could be a 76, but maybe 75...
