Maximum tire size on stock steel 17" wheel

First off I have to say that I did try to use the search function, but due to being the proud owner of the world's slowest internet service I'm not finding the answer.

I'm trying to get a taller tire for my 2012 f-350 drw. Width is not as big of a concern as height. I'm trying to improve my approach angle and get a little more highway mileage by lowering my overall gear ratio.

I have a stock suspension HD front end, 4wd with a tool bed on the back. I am sure I have LOTS of room on the rear for a taller tire, but I'm not sure what I could get away with on the front.

I have the stock 17" steel wheels and I would like to keep them just because I'm gonna have a hard time coughing up $$ for new wheels. That plus the fact that the steel wheels work just fine for everything I do.

Any input is appreciated, Thanks.

265's are as big as you can go if you actually tow heavy and without the use of spacers. You can go up to a 285 if you use a 2" spacer. I'm just not a fan of spacers. I did see on one of the forums that I frequent ( Fordification) I think where a member had a custom set of wheels built. Too much $$$$ for me. I'm satisfied with what came on my Dually for now.

Unfortunately I think any kind of efficiency gain through taller effective ratio will be neutralized by the additional height. The taller you go the worse your wind resistance gets.
