Fuel Guage
I have a 1992 Ford Explorer XLT (actually my wife's). Since we got it second hand, it has not had a working fuel guage. I thought it was the sending unit which I replaced. Did not fix the problem.
I have noticed that the guage is not pinned at full like it should be if it had not power, but it's still pointing near full but does not move. Any thoughts what I should check next. We are going away for a week starting Saturday so I do not have a bunch of time to figure this out, but I would love to have a working guage for the trip.
Any help would be appreciated.
Jim
Did you pull your tank and change the sending unit? If so, was it a fair or simple process?
If you check my thread "Wickwaer" on the 2nd page, "Fuel Gauge Test Needed" you will find some additional info. This is why I have not pulled my tank. My oil pressure gauge stopped 1st and when it started working, the fuel gauge stopped. This happened during a 100 mile trip.
I am tempted to start at the instrument panel if the "tank is not friendly". Below is a little info on the instrument circuit. Plus, in one fuel gauge thread, both units had been replaced and the gauge still did not work.
Please give me some feed-back!!!
There is a small circuit board that plugs into the left rear of the instrument panel (you will not find it in a Haynes manual electrical schematic) that can affect the fuel gague operation. I suspect it is a voltage regulator and may also feed other gagues. I traced the lead from the gague thru it before it runs back to the tank sensor/float. To get to it, you need to pull the instrument panel out . Thanks, Joe
Thanks,
Joe
On a happy note, I got an average gas mileage of 23.5 miles to the gallon to and from the outer banks of north carolina with AC 40% of the trip.
that's a heck of alot better than the 15 my '90 F150 gets...
