M5od R1 compatible with M5od R2?

Alright, I have an 89 F150 XLT Lariat with the 300 I6 and a 5 speed M5od R2. The transmission recently broke (the input shaft does not turn the output shaft). I found a transmission pretty cheap nearby me, but it's out of a Ford Ranger. According to some tech websites, it could be an M5od R1 or and M5od R2. Is there a significant difference between the two transmissions? It looks like it will bolt right on, but I've heard the R1 is for smaller vehicles. Also, how can I tell the two apart?
Any insight is appreciated.
