Curious
Hey all,
I'm curious as to what kind of jobs people in this forum have. I respect everyone's privacy and don't expect many replies, but I'd like to get some varieties in job ideas for my future.
If anyone out there welds for a living; what exactly do you do/work on? (welding, duhhh) I mean, what kind of jobs do you get, what do you weld, are there contracts you get, or are you in an auto shop and you do bodywork?
Not really sure what else to say, I'm just trying to find every option of supporting myself I can, automotive wise.

Right now I'm a Junior in High School, but the school year's about to end and I'm going to get a summer job at a grocer. I tried for an oreilly's but the cashier said I have to be 18.
My overall goal is simple, really. For a while I thought I'd try at school for mechanical engineering, but I don't see myself putting out that much effort. All I really want to do is work in an auto shop doing repairs & upgrades, and someday have a shop of my own. But I never want to be a manager or anything like that. I want to be doing the work, 'cause it's what I like.

Land Use Planner
I'm a land use planner for a city of about 63,000 well-educated, above-average income, and sometimes whiney residents. My position involves the review, analysis, and design of residential, commercial, and institutional development plans.
That means detailed knowledge of zoning, site planning, civil engineering, traffic engineering, architecture & environmental design, landscape architecture, and environmental law. Related disciplines in my field include business & economics, political science, psychology, sociology, and ecology. I'm also a Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist, database and website administrator, and general software tech in my division.
But first and foremost, I am a gearhead.

i am a warehouse management consultant. We provide process and software solutions to 3rd party warehouses. I end up working about 5 or 6 hours a day in a warehouse office and another hour on and off at home (bill 8 hours because the software does the work while i relax). Its nice i leave my house about 7:30 and get home around 3. but like anything else there are down sides i have to be willing to answer my cell phone (work phone) 24/7 if it rings. When i go on vacation i bring my computer and work at night, but i can work from anywhere if need to.

I'm in technology/software sales. 6 years in with my current company. Work from the house. 35 years old, and 6 figure income as well. Weather pending, I get to play golf about 4 times a week, and really only have to answer/talk to my boss a few times a month.
For the most part, all I do is build relationships. Taking clients to play golf, wining/dining them, and taking them to sporting events. Once they're buttered up, they sign on the dotted line. Rinse/repeat!

I am a 70 yr old jack of all trades, but master of none. Finished High School in 1970. My first summer job was busting tires at my local Sears Automotive, and was 16. In 1975 I joined the Navy as a deck ape. Left the Navy in 1995 as a Information Specialist. I started my own company consulting designing and installing Information Systems. I am still in business and despite my age, I am on site everyday, pulling cables with the rest of my crew.
Automotive is a hobby. I have picked up my knowledge from refusing to pay high shop rates for something that I can learn to do. I have had no formal training, and am still learning. Having said that, when I purchased my 2010 F350 King Ranch with its twin turbo charged diesel.... I quickly realized it was going to have to go to the dealer to get worked on....... I can change oil and filters and that's it...... anything more and I have to remove the cab from the frame.
I will keep my old truck just so I have something to tinker with.
