power steering question

I am doing the conversion to a 78-79 power steering system. Someone said that I should but a 78-79 pump in the truck. I am going to order it but should I get the pump with or without the reservoir. I think I should get the one with the res. my next questin is I have a 390 fe in the truck can I use the old mounting bracket for the pump or do I need a different one, and If I need a different one what will fit the motor and pump because they did not make the 390 in 78-79.

power steering question

I used my '74's PS pump as-is when I did the conversion, and it worked just fine. I had to get a little innovative with the hoses to make everything work, but even that wasn't a big deal. You just need to find a helpful parts guy to look thru his catalogs to find something that will match up close, and then do the final bending of the rigid pipe ends as needed. If you go to the later model pump, you will have problems getting a bracket to match up to the old FE, so why bother? Steve

power steering question

When i converted my 76 over to the 78/79 style i used my old pump. I have had no problems. The return line i just used a piece of ps hose you can get from the local parts store. And for the pressure i had my parts store make one.

power steering question

JohnnyRed - take a look at the Tech Articles. Back in '99 Vaughan McCabe wrote on up on the Hi-Boy steering conversion, and many of us have done it. I didn't follow "Sparky's" recipe exactly, but the concept is very well covered at any rate.
Neighborhood - I didn't worry about shielding the reservoir on my pump with headers, and never had any apparent problems while I had the original steering. However, when I did the upgrade to the 78-79 integrated steering box, I did add essentially a small transmission cooler in the return line, just for insurance.
