Check codes for sure.
Replace o2 sensor no matter what. It's old and will only help mileage and keep the computer informed.
Problem with running cleaner of any kind is that it really throws off the emissions test. If you had run cleaner a tank or two before the test, it could fail because of it.
Check to make sure the smog pump is working correctly and the valving is not dumping the air out, it needs to go into the cat or head (solution to pollution is dilution) check to make sure the timing is set to 8*. Your air filter is in real good shape (or remove it)
The cat could be non functional. If you have the single inlet, single outlet cat then its easy to replace. Get a cat on eBay for 100$ and replace it.
I've seen a bunch of cars smoking and smelling like a 2stroke and still pass emissions (in pa the emissions computer is directly linked to the state database)
When was the last complete tuneup. Air Filter plugs wires cap rotor fuel filter and coil. Big thing to remember, no fuel additives (there is one additive I see that was "will make any car pass emissions" kinda crap, but I don't believe it)
Is there a check prosedure for for the pvc valve? or is it just a replacement?
And how are codes pulled on this truck? Is there a diagnostic port in the engine bay? Is it similar to my 94 ranger, jumper two wires and the Check light flashes the codes?
Also no nox reedings on the printout, just HC and CO
CO2 is measured at 11.6% @ idle and 11.5% @ 2500
and o2 4.2% @idle and 4.1% @ 2500
Also the last complete tune up was less then 100 miles ago when I got the truck, plugs, cap, rotor, all fluids changed, air filter, fuel filter.
PCV are cheap, just change it and make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks from it or any other hoses. Especially the little ones going to the three relays, drivers side if you have them. Your close to passing. Did the guy at the smog station tell you what he thought it might be? I've been getting my 94 to pass by asking them if it's getting close to failing what they thought might be happening. Tap on the converter, not hard, use the base of your hand and listen for rattling. Or if it looks like the original cat, it's most likely fried. If the O2 sensor is near it you might be able to see inside. So replace the PCV, O2 sensor, recheck your air filter, take the truck on a good warm up drive both freeway and some stop and go use your A/C you want that car nice and toasty before the sniffer test, make sure you have clean fuel. Hopefully your smog guy will retest for free. If not, next time if your not sure, have them do a pre-test and they'll do it first and if it passes they'll send the info to the DMV, if not they'll usually let you return for at least another test. Good Luck!!!
thanks! after i asked i looked up what a pvc is gunna cost and its cost effective to replace it at 14 bucks and an o2 sensor is only 40 or so from bosh. The cat bolts up and the pipe comes just past the cab and dumps out so i think i can pull the pipes from the cat back and get a good view of the cat internals. the guy i go to wont retest free but they do it at half price so it works out to like 20 for the second run.
