Just put on headers

I just put on some hedman headers. I have a few qustions about it. Where do i put my o2 sencer, the stock location will not work because the pipes are to long. I also thought that when you take off the o2 sencer and run it the check engine light will come on, mine didnt, it just made lots a gray smoke. Is the smoke from where it is running lean or rich. I really dont know, i am goin to get it taken cair of it tomoro. My truck is a 93 f150 with a 302 and aod
Thanks Rudy

The O2 sensor will trigger the light after the engine is fully watmed up - at least that's what mine did. I ran my truck without an O2 sensor for two days last week, but it wasn't until a afternoon drive in traffic that the engine finally fully warmed up and threw the light on. I am guessing the computer doesn't look for the O2 sensor signal until the engine reaches normal operating temperature.

I unhooked the negative battery leads for overf 20 minutes to clear the code.

Hedman makes an o2 sensor adapter that fits onto the collectors. If that location won't work for you, you can find the proper size bung at an exhaust shop and have it welded into the header at the appropriate place.

The o2 will code at the strangest times when not functioning properly, or when unhooked. It may go 10 miles, or it may go 750 miles before it codes, as mine did. Running your motor without the o2 sensor in place is risky. The computer gets a false reading and changes the fuel mixture, timing, and other things in an effort to get the correct reading. This is not good for your motor. Auto makers are finding that some computer parameters are too narrow, and are coding when there really is not a problem. As a result, we spend big bucks chasing problems that really don't exist, but which we have to repair.

Yeah mine did the same thing. I unhooked mine to try to get the o2 sensor out, forgot to plug it back in because i got sidetracked. I drove to work and on the way home i got the engine light and i started bugging out like whats wrong now but then i remembered the o2 sensor and felt a sigh of relief. A missing o2 sensor will cause the engine to run rich.

Primary rig is Green Thunder:

88' F-250 Superduty 4x4 351/c6
95' Mercury Cougar 4.6L V-8
80' E-350 300/6 with a
3 spd column shifter. Top speed is 65mph, Go Baby Go!

FYI. When you first start your truck it runs in an open loop system where it only takes reading from a few sensors and runs on a predetermined fuel map. When the truck warms up then it goes into closed loop operation where it uses feedback from all the sensores to modify the fuel map. That is why the O2 sensor will not light the check engine lamp until the truck is warmed up.

Just a thought. I have had problems on mustangs using long tube headers since the o2 is moved so far back. It seems to effect some more than others. I installed a set from "flowtech" that had provisions for o2 in one of the primary tubes. this may be an answer to the random codes. Regards
