Help- dead motor?

Hey guys- sitting here waiting for a tow truck, so I thought I'd see how bad I'm screwed.

2005 Excursion- 6.0 with 60K (not a typo- really only 60K)

Wife was driving it today and it wouldn't start after shopping. Turns over, but sounds starved for fuel. I got it to start once, but idles low and rough, and nothing when I push the go pedal.

No CEL
Took the edge gauge out of my truck, and it wouldn't even come on....like there's no power to the OBD port.
I checked the fuel cutoff switch- not tripped.
Was hoping it was just a plugged fuel filter...just checked the oil dipstick and it looks like little black plastic pieces on the end of the dipstick (really can't be good).

Anyone have any ideas what the issue may be or how screwed I am?

Thanks

What codes does your edge show? You can have pending codes without a check engine light.

Never mind I just read that your edge wont come on. Check all the fuses including those in the engine compartment, I believe the fuse for the OBD port is F22.

Doh! - I didn't think to check the OBD fuse.

Its at the stealership now - they're going to look at it this afternoon and get back to me.

Is there anything that would leave little black plastic pieces in the oil pan that wouldn't be bad? Thats whats got me worried most right now.

What is it with timing of these things??? It figures this would happen - I'm supposed to leave for vacation next Friday for 2 weeks, and was planning to drive the Ex. I guess better now than on the road, but sheesh!

About the only plastic I can think of is in the oil filter housing ( standpipe and drain back valve ) oil filter itself, HPOP reservoir screen and some plastic around the lifters ( im not sure what they are called )

Haha - yeah, she wouldnt have looked at the gauges.

I'm 100% sure that it didn't overheat - it was early morning after sitting all night, and she drove 7-10 miles tops. I doubt that it even got up to normal operating temp. And I got there from work less than an hour after she had the issue, and it was barely warm.

Will follow this one, like to here what you find. But I don't trust the dealer. They usually make it a lot bigger then it really is.

Yeah, I thought of the oil filter housing, but didnt have anything available at the time to open it up - and if it got hot enough to melt that and suck in into the engine, wouldnt a whole bunch of bad things happened right away, and sure something would have thrown the CEL?

I know it didnt get that hot this morning - maybe sometime this last week, but would it have held on that long?

Yeah, I tend to agree - too many times the dealer seems to push for a bigger more expensive repair that what may be necessary.

We do have a pretty good dealer that has a diesel shop and handles alot of commercial accounts with trucks, so hopefully they have the skill.

I didn't have a whole lot of choice - there isn't a local diesel performance shop, and I need it fixed ASAP as I was planning to put a few thousand miles on it in the next few weeks on vacation.

I hope it works out for you. Sometimes we just have to bitt the bullet. They usually cause a new problem anytime they have touched anything of mine, that's why this forum is so important to most of us. I'll be waiting to here what it is.

My reference to the items mentioned were possible sources of the small pieces of black plastic you found on the dipstick.

Without a whole lot to go on, my best guess would be a bad ICP sensor or connection at the sensor.

Well guys - here's an update.

Just spoke to the dealer - he says that there is an intermittent drop in fuel pressure, so they're replacing the fuel pump.

$800 for the diagnostics, parts, and labor (ouch)

I probably could have replaced it myself cheaper, but with us leaving next Friday for a 2 week roadtrip, I need it fixed now and don't really have time to order the parts and replace it myself before Friday.

Hopefully that resolves the issue - dealer says they checked everything and there were no other issues.

He said that they didn't see anything on the dipstick, but I'm having them change the oil anyways (Even though its not due yet) and they're going to check for anything when they drain it.
