Hey all, my 55 f100 I6 is not wanting to start. After letting it sit for almost two years i finally got back on it, i put an electric fuel pump on it, and waited till the float had plenty of fuel in it, and started cranking away. but it wouldn't start!
And the battery started getting weaker and weaker.... so i just let it go untill i can charge up the battery again.
Any suggestions that a point in the right direction as to what it could be.
and it was running prior to the sitting for two years.
What does it sound like when you are cranking?
Are you getting spark? Is the carb pumping fuel in the intake?
I had an issue with mine where the points were a little corroded. A little sandpaper on the points and it made all the difference.
One time my wife's grandpa told me that some guys were working on a tractor. He knew what the problem was the moment he stepped out of his truck. He could hear the issue. maybe a video of what's happening will make it obvious to the experts here. (Or I could be asking to see a video of your engine because I like pictures and video. )
Stuck needle valve in carb. Massive vacuum leak at old booster diaphragm. Varnish in carb. Bad gas. Points stuck or corroded. Ignition switch not hot, or, not on. Those are a few things to check.
It needs reasonable fuel/air, spark, and timing. There's little else to check.
Condensation and lack of use can screw points up. Point files or Emory cloth can restore them. Spritz WD-40 in carb and see if it kicks over. If so, fuel problem(s) are suspect.
On your points, check to see if you have good connectivity when they are closed. If not, just a little sandpaper on each point and you should be good to go. With the amount of driving I'm assuming you do, they should be fine if they are clean.
Horvaths is correct, there isn't much to check, but it sure can puzzle me at times.
