2005 explorer drive train issues
yesterday I was towing a trailer about 1000 lbs, and got a right rear flat tire. drove about 2 km to get off the road to change tire. after tire change, started driving off, drive train immediately began to clink, clunk, jolt and other various verbs. Could not accellerate above 30 mph for fear of loosing xmsn. it acts like xfer case is trying to shift in/out of 4wd. I purposly shifted in/out of 4 lo and hi and condition did not change. nursed it to a local garage, about 20 km, lifted it and spun wheels with no load applied, condition remains. my spare tire is not the same size, 1.5 inch smaller, it was raining, 138,000 miles since new. RSC? Advance trac? Transfer case electrical or mechanical? Local mechanic is leading towards transfer case mechanical. I'd like to get more input prior to wasting money that I really don't have. Any and all help is appreciated. Another note, when pushing the accellerator, it is very sluggish, not wanting to engage.

If you have the auto 4wd system the tires MUST be the same size or the computer will interpret the different wheel speeds as slip, and the traction system will become active.
Have you replaced the spare with the proper size?
Have you turned off the traction control system to see if the symptom remains?
If you have a bunch of noise with the truck on a hoist while spinning the tires with the key off, then you probably have broken parts. If your "mechanic" can't tell the difference between a transfer case noise and a front axle noise, I certainly wouldn't let him lay another finger on it.

hooked up computer today, read out states: transfer case contact plate general circuit malfunction, transfer case contact plate ground open, 4x4 clutch relay circuit malfunction. any suggestions. to FireMe, ordered another tire, disconnected - batt lead, checked all associated fuses. tks.
