Alright one more post for the thread that wont die.

My friend was under my truck checking out the cover and for reasons beyond my understanding felt the need to touch the bead of the Right Stuff and broke the seal. Back to square one. So now he will be taking off the cover and redoing everything while I sit back and watch. How hard is it to get off the old Right Stuff? Is it as tedious as removing rtv?

^ A nice sharp one. Then a good towel running the surface will ball up and take off any remains.

Put the original cover back on for Pete's sake and throw the chrome garbage away. How many posts ago did I tell you this

If it started leaking by touching it it WASN'T SEALED

You gotta be jerkin us around! We told you it was going to leak, and now you blame your friend who simply touched it for causing a leak? Gimme a friggen break. The only mistake your friend made was in not choosing his friends more carefully.

It was fine! Not a drop of oil on the bottom of the cover for days and he *****ed with it causing it to leak again. I'm still not sure whether it was an accident or he was trying to be funny. I didn't say I beat the guy up over it so give me a break.

And guess what, I went out and put another line of RT around the outside and its sealed again. I know you guys just can't stand that I'm not fixing it the "right" way so I'll just do all of us a favor and stop posting. Thanks to all those who actually offered help and didn't criticize everything I did.

I would like to be the first to point out that you haven't FIXED anything as of yet. Someone merely looking at your last repair was enough to induce its latest in a long string of failures. What makes you optimistic that this FIX will be different ?

We will look for the differential rebuild thread in a few weeks.

Sounds like you need to throw those covers away. I see everyone's point here on letting the sealant cure, I think there is a bigger issue being the cover. No matter how much you try and try you will never get the cover to seal right. If you want the flashy look for the rear at least, buy an OEM motorcraft 08 rear diff cover for the rear. I never saw any benefit to fancy diff covers, you want them shiny them buy silver spray paint! Even my Grandfather a mechanic of almost 68 years has told me chrome will never seal unless it has extensive prep work, then it might hold for a month. I would trust the advice given on FTE, we are sharing our experiences. I had a 70 caprice derby car 350 V8 that had chrome Valve covers, well once the motor got hot oil seeped out and hit the hot exhaust manifolds and started a fire. Same concept with the diff cover, it will leak.

I think that would be a wise choice as far as the chrome diff cover anyway.

A rubber gasket might seal it up. I am sure someone makes a all rubber gasket.
