The other day our Central A/C started acting up. It cut off then cut right back on (Compressor and all) then it acted normal for a few days. But now the blower fan has gotten to where it'll come on all by itself and sometimes the compressor will cut off but the fan keeps going?? I replaced the thermostat but that didn't help and even with the thermostat set to off the blower fan still came on??? I"m lost. I know this is probably an easy fix since everything works it's just not working together at the right time.
The unit is a Goodman unit (I've found out isn't the best) which is about 3 years old. We've only owned the house 2 years. I took the cover off and looked at the all the wires they all still look great nothing obviously burned or corroded or anything?
Not that I know a lot about these things, but it sounds like the controller board. If your a/c is part of a forced air furnace, the board is inside the furnace -- otherwise, I don't know.
The controller board tells the compressor and fan when to run. The fan normally does run for a while after the compressor is off just to extract the last bit of cool air from the heat exchanger.
Sometimes you can have odd troubles if you have a digital thermostat with a unit that wasn't originally designed for it. Digital thermostats that don't have batteries take their power from the controller. Some of them 'steal ' the power if the controller wasn't designed to power a thermostat. Or if the cable to the thermostat isn't wired with a separate power line.
Also, you might want to check if there's water dripping down from the plenum. (where the heat exchanger is). If your drain line is clogged, the plenum could overfill and possibly drip on the controller.
It's probably easy to change the controller, but I bet that they're spendy. So, you probably want to be pretty sure.
I've had a goodman central system since the winter of '98. Gas furnace and a/c. I've had to have the control board replaced once, it will make the system act stupid or not act at all.
As for the outside unit, I've only had to replace the capacitor and contacts. Otherwise, she runs like a champ.
The inside squirrel cage had to be replaced a few years ago,
Goodman is known as a low end low cost system that is typically used in apartments, condensed housing units and numerous contractor new construction equipment. I wouldn't write it off as a bad unit. Friends of mine bought a trane system and have had numerous service calls.
Thanks guys, I got in touch with the company that installed it and they are coming to look at it for free. I was glad about that. The AC guy says he thinks it the relay board which is covered by the warranty, so now he just has to get one in and us make an appointment for him to come back and replace it.
