Got my flowmaster, but.....

I recently had a flowmaster 40 series original installed on my 79 with a 351 in it. Its all stock 2 1/4 in. piping and the original manifolds. Now, according to the flowmaster site and numerous other sources, the 40 series is the loudest flowmaster made. But, its not as loud as I had hoped for, or even as loud as some of my friends rides, who have smaller engines, and different mufflers. I have a regular cat on it that seems to be unclogged. So, would running a 3 in. pipe after the muffler give me the sound I want? I wanted to go from the muffler and then just dump it after that with a pipe pointing down, but my dad wont let me do it yet. Any opinions?

A 3 inch pipe(from the cat back) would definately give you more sound compared to the 21/4... replaced mine with a 2.5 cat back flowmaster (custom bend) exhaust system before I had the cat replaced & it increased sound as well as MPG.

A high flow cat would help with sound... (needed a new cat on my explorer... so I bought a high flow cat)... It brought the sound to it's full potential compared to when I had the factory cat (with the back one hollowed at that time, & still passed emmisions I might add!)

Just wondering why your dad wouldn't let you modify your exhaust yet??

Is it your truck or his?? Just curious.

Anyways, hopes this helps.

remove the catalytic converter...

also, realize that it takes power to make sound... even if someone has a smaller engine, if it's making more power, it's gonna make more "POP"!

ALSO realize that the truck may be louder from outside than from the driver's seat...

have one of your buddies make a WOT pass past you so that you can hear it from the outside... it may sound better (louder!) than you think!!

It is my truck, but I still live with my parents, im only 17. He says that it would be too loud if i dumped it, and also says that when you do that, all the exhaust heat will go right under the car and heat it up. Im in Ca. so the cat has to be on for smog purposes. I probably will just put in a high flow one and bigger 3in. pipes. Eventually I want to go to true dual, but till I get the money I have to use whatever I can afford. So how much does a high flow cat cost probably? Also, If I was to run my exhaust out the side in front of the rear tire, would the exhaust discolor my tire and make it get all dirty? Thanks!

ok, got with the 3" system.... with the highflow cat(mine's approx $250 Canadianw/15% tax included in the price)... that will give the sound you want... as I mentioned...

Hope your dad allow you to do it, that way...
come to think about it, dumping the piping after the muffler isn't a good idea cause you might also get exhaust fumes from underneath into the cab... (I don't know what the condition of your truck is.) Also, you might fail the visual check when going for emmissions... I suppose CA does that too on top fo the emmision test... Here in ON they do

I haven't seen any exhaust fumes discoloring any tires.... or maybe you mean rims... If you do mean rims, the #1 cause is brake dust ... not exhaust.

As for overheating of the tires from exhaust heat, never had read any news about that either.... on the paper, safety programs, etc

Good luck!!
