I just Brought A 1998 Ford Explorer XLT AWD V8 I don't have any control Of the 4 Wheel drive system Is there any way to Mod This to Make A Hi & Lo 4WD?Or even a 2WD Mod? Are the Reflectors In the Bottom of the doors supposed to light up or are they just reflectors? Thanks
there's no way to conntroll the AWD the only way to make it 2wd is take out the frony drive line you could do a control-trac conversion (would cost some and youed have to run wire's an all that junk) the light's in the door's are supposed to light up
i just left the AWD an im kinda liking it now but it takes some getting used too
That's kind of the point of AWD: it's on all the time. Like Ford_tr_man said, there is no way to disable it through a mod or any other means besides removing your front drivetrain.

Thanks For the Info I guess It's going to Stay AWD.I have to check the Bulbs In the Door's Then Because they do not light Up.
Ford eliminated the bulbs in the doors on the '98 model year so you won't likely find any bulbs. You might get lucky and find the wiring though. The first several months of the '98 model still included the wiring. They just didn't install the bulb. Sometime during the '98 model though, the wiring also disappeared. Ford felt that they didn't need the reflectors in the doors to light up since they introduced the puddle lamps in '98.
i was thinking of doing a true 4x4 conv but after lookin in to it. it seemed like to much an i was supprised how the awd haddles heavy snow an mud an san or whatever you can throw at it
i have the same prob with my 03 f-150 super crew in the early 03's they had the wireing but no bulb's then later they yanked every thing an so of course i got a later 03 so not light's for me
