thanks for the info guys. I have seen recommendations saying best mods are to replace the pistons for higher compression as well as a cam... Are the pistons completely necessary to build good power? Or can I get good results with a good cam, intake, carb etc? If the engine needs torn down and rebuilt I would likely do higher comp pistons but if I can avoid it and just do some good bolt ons I would do that.

You will get good results by carefully matching all the above. You can also add a set of aussie heads to bump up compression. There is a guy named Tim Meyer I think, that is dedicated to building these motors.

I would imagine the aussie heads aren't cheap. I've seen Tim Meyer's name pop up a few times in my searches. Thanks again!

I have a 390 in my 65 f100 and absolutely LOVE it...but then I don't have to drive it everyday. The thing is an absolute pig with and insatiable thirst.
My 77 f250 has the 400 in it. I have always heard bad things about 400s but my dad put 200,000 miles on this truck before I got it so there.
