its a 99 psd,4x4,automatic, manual lockouts, 130,000 miles. it decides to rumble when it likes, more often when hitting bumps. checkes hubs, they are in unlock position. rumble goes away if i engage into 4 high, and leave hubs unlocked. i havent replaced anything yet. bought the truck new, havent had any problems till now. checked the wheel bearings for play, found none. nothing seems loose. are the factory lockouts the culprit? any info would he helpful. im not a millionaire, so 12 trips to the ford dealer is out of the question. hoping someone on here could shed some light on this. thanks.
If your thinking lockouts, I would assume the rumble is comming from the front? May want to check Your axle shaft joints, they could be on the way out.
Front axle u-joints or front driveline u-joints. That's what I'd check first. I know they will cause a vibration when they get bad. Also check the driveline slip joint.
My 99 250SD is doing the same thing. I put the WARN hubs in and the problem got worse. It looks like the axle shaft is touching the hub every now and then making that noise. When you put it in 4X4, the axle is now spinning along with the hub. No noise then. How should we fix this???
my last truck did the same thing.pulled front end apart and found the stub shaft and bearing in the inside of hub/bearing assy were bad.the rubber cap for the auto hubs was missing and had let water into the assy. taking out the bearing and wearing a groove into the stub shaft of the fron axle - its a pain to take apart if its rusted at all but worth checking..
I had the same problem with my 99sd. Grab the front axle ujoint and see how play it has up and down(it shouldn't have much) if it has alot the bearing is gone and the stub shaft is most liklely trashed. BEEN THERE. the bearing in the hub is changeable if the hub is not destroyed around the nearing, the stub shaft is also replacable. the only place to buy these parts is the ford dealer. the bearing is about 20$ of the hub is trashed go to autozone it is about 250$, the stub shaft can be bought seperatly of the hole side axle at about400$. If the dealer dosen't have the part number for the stub shaft only let me kmow it is about 100$ and I can give you the part number, since you are changing the shaft might as well change tjhe u-joint as well 25$. any questions on how to do it let me know.
