My father-in-law has a 1964 1 ton. He bought the truck from someone who switched out the original engine for a 390 w/ electronic ignition. He has a problem with it dying. It will start ok, but only run for a bout a mile or two, then it dies. If you let it sit for about five min. it will then start back up. We changed out the ignition control module and it kept doing it. We have checked to see if it is getting spark, and it is. It is also getting plenty of fuel. We are kind of at a loss for what to do next. Anyone have any suggestions? Any would be appreciated.
My nephew's truck is doing the same thing, and we tried a couple new coils. My other guess is the pickup assy, or the resistor wire(ballast). Someone else looked at it and said the MSD is the culprit....so, I gotta start looking at it this week and find out. That or put a diesel in it .
I had this problem with my F-150 351 M I bought a rebuilt dist and had no further problems. Now it was prolly the pick up or reluctor wheel either case i just bought a rebuilt distributor was only 42 bucks and just had to slap the thing in.
Hey everybody, Thanks for all of your help, we changed out the fuel filters and they were totally nasty. Put new ones on it and it runs to quote my father-in-law "like a gut-shot panther" We appreciate all of the suggestions.
Gut shot panther!! That's a good one, mind if I steal it?
The same thing was happening to me and it turned out to be the fuel pump was failing with a big hill between me and my house but the old girl made it up and to the house.
