My F600's 361 has shot craps and I could tie up more in a rebuild then I have in the whole truck so I'm looking at a motor swap. I have a 85ish F600 truck I can pick up the motor and transmission for 500 bucks. I know the FT engines have the funny front motor mount so I assume I'll need the engine cross member out of the new truck but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the rest of the issues I'm looking at:
Transmission cross member
Drive Line
Clutch linkage
Frame spacing ( will the new cross members reach across the frame?)
I think the rest of the issues, like power steering and cooling are easy enough to over come.
If anyone is really interested, I tore the 361 down because I had zero compression on #7. In the tear down process I broke a head bolt off in the block, found out that valve seat has fallen out of #6 beating the tar out of that piston and leaving a nice gouge in the cyl wall, the clutch is down to the rivots, and the flywheel needs surfaced. The late model truck was running and driving when the rear end was taken from it for another project.
If it is OEM and Lima motor it would be a 370 or 429.
Your clutch, is it not hydraulic?
As you have access to the '85, I'd get anything and everything mount, linkage, accessory and wiring harness wise that I could see connected to the engine/trans.
Ya, that's a throw back to cars and trucks using 429/460 interchangeably. It's a 429, my old truck is a Z bar clutch. I don't know about the new, I'm going to look at it tonight and get the motor to run.
I have measured my frame rails on the old truck they are about 34" outside I'm assuming if the new truck is 34" or less I should be able to modify the cross members to fit.
The 429 was covered in smog items and I could not actually get it to run. It would hit but never run. I think it's a pretty tired engine, it also has some signs that someone had been working on a miss or engine issue. There was a 9th plug wire recently installed and the ignition module had been replaced recently.
I've found a running 361 with terrible exhaust leaks, I think the manifolds will have to come off to fix. I'm not sure what's worse breaking half those bolts off or retro fitting that 429....
I'm leaning towards the 361 though. I also get an extra transmission (although it's a 4 speed vs my 5) , hyrda vac booster, and any other smalls I can strip off the old girl. All for the same money as the 429.
