We just had new hood hinges installed on our 1953 F-100. Because of this we have lost at least 5" of opening space and the hood won't stay open. What could have caused this and does anyone have any idea on how to fix this problem. Our truck was chosen as a display vehicle for Ford's 100th Anniversary Celebration and we need help FAST! Any ideas, suggestions, specs on anything related to the installation of hood hinges would be greatly appreciated!
mmm... could your springs not been wound properly? They need to be wound with tension on them and the hook end shoved in the slot that receives it. If it was easy to put the spring on then you did something wrong. best. himmelberg
Please be patient with me as I am not a mechanic. We bought the hood hinges with the springs already in them. I looked at the old springs and see what you mean about having to wind them and insert them but could anyone tell me in simple terms the procedure and tools to use? We lost our mechanic at the beginning of this year and now were hoofin' it on our own.
Mid Fifties sells this "tool" for 10 bucks... its a piece of 4" pipe with a notch cut in it. The tool captures the hook on the end of the spring... the inner "hook" is set in the pivot slot... the tool is rotated clockwise a half turn and the hook slid onto the tab that captures it. The picture should help.
Best. Himmelberg
I have the instructions that go with the D-luxe tool Himmel posted. Except mine is all bent up because it's made of crap thinwall tubing. I'll scan and email the instructions tomorrow at work unless you solved this already. Don't feel bad, I am a mechanic and the springs are a bit of a pain to install.

I have it scanned. Email me and tell me where to email the file too. I don't bel;ieve I can send a file attachment on FTE mail. (Or can I???)
Do you have Adobe Acrobat reader? If not, try to download it off the Adobe website. Adobe reader is free. If not, let me know and I can convert to a JPEG or something. Adobe would be best. I have a real good scan of a real mediocre set of instructions. It will be legible in Adobe pdf file for sure.
