tranny swap

I have a 1992 f-150, 4.9,4x4. IT was formerly a US forestry service vehicle. It has a 4 speed man. Trans that is geared really low. I was looking to change it to a 5 speed man. (not the Mazda granny) which one should I look for to maintain 5-6thousand pound towing ability and gain some non-towing gas mileage.

just a food for though but google gear vendors unit, that is also an option and look for one for your transfer case

Holy buckets.....looked at gear vendors and their stuff looks awesome.....just don't have 3000.00.....that's what I paid for the truck

ZF-5 would be a good choice.

I believe the ZF5 is your only option if you rule out the Mazda unit. BTW the mazda does not have a "granny" first gear, its the ZF5 that does.

If you don't want a granny first gear you need the Mazda 5-speed found in 1/2 ton trucks.. all the ZFs have a granny first in comparison, and unless your truck has 4.10 gears it was never rated to tow 5-6000lbs anyway.

Just go with the Mazda, it's perfect for what you're asking. I've beat on them pretty hard and they are a lot tougher than they get credit for. They're also dirt cheap to buy initially and to replace parts.
