Does the PSD turbo need to cool down before the engine is shut off? I know with turbo powered cars a lot of people say it's bad for the turbo if you don't let it cool down. What about the PSD?
All turbo's need to cool down before shut off. The reason is because turbo's get their lubrication from the engine oil. When you come to a stop, and the engine is at idle, the oil pump is also turning at idle speed, the turbo however is still spinning at up tp 100,000 rpm's. If you shut the engine off, you cut off the turbo's oil supply while it is still spinning very fast. It can take less than 5 seconds to damage the turbo bearings at that speed. Let the turbo slow down before you shut off the engine!
Depending on the air filter set up you have you can sometimes hear it. If not, 5 min. cooldown is a good guidline. Also, when you first crank the engine make sure you have good oil pressure before you rev it up. A dry start will kill your turbo as well.
So your saying that every time I'm ready to turn off my engine I should wait 5 minutes? That seems like a pain. I can't imagine that Ford designed the engine that way. There is no mention of "turbo cool down" in the manual.
A pyrometer or turbo monitor will help you know when to shut off the engine. The manual for my 01' does say to allow 7-10 minutes before shutting down the engine after an EXTENDED trip.
I do let my engine cool down and the length of trip or usage determines the actual time I let the engine idle. It can be a pain, but it is a small price to pay to own that awesome PSD. Take care.
I let my pyrometer tell me when it's safe to shut off the truck. When the temp drops to 300*, then it's time. In a hurry, I've shut it off at 325*, but don't tell anyone....
I let my system cool down until it reaches 300-325 deg on the pyro guage. Some times it takes 3-4 min. Some times it only takes a min or less. For example, when I have been coasting down hill without any acceleration for a short distance. If you find this to be to much trouble, there is a device that you can buy that will keep the truck running until it reaches the desired temp, even after you have removed the key, locked and left the vehicle.
I usually try and take it easy on the throttle as I reach my point of travel. Then i usually do all the small things while the truck is running , like take the seatbelt off , turn lights off , etc. I still have yet to install my pyro gauge , but I have 20,000 miles on my truck , and my turbo seems to be fine.
I drive a Dodge so my cool down time might be a little different, but my manual says to let it cool down anywhere from 30 seconds to five minutes...depending on what type of driving you've been doing and what kind of load you've been pulling. If I've just made a long trip I'll let it idle for about 5 minutes before shutting down. If I've just been driving around town I'll let it cool for about 30 seconds. I don't have a pyro (yet).

You haven't read your manual close enough then. Mine clearly says that you need to let it cool down when you have been working the engine. You don't need to let it cool down when you drive around town, but I always let mine cool down after extended highway travel, towing, or hauling. Failure to do so will lead to early turbo failure. If you add gauges, you can tell exactly when to shut the truck off rather than play the guessing game.
Another thing I have done is activate my Automatic start after I have been pulling my enclosed car trailer , or doing some import racing on the tollway. This lets me take the key out of the truck , and arm my alarm while the truck is still running. The truck will run for 20 min then shut itself off , while keeping all the doors locked and the alarm armed...
