Question guages ???

I have a few questions about guages. I'm thinking AutoMeter, but other viewpoints are always welcome. I need a tranny temp guage, so I need to decide what to do - this is where you come in.

Should I use a mechanical or electrical tranny temp guage?
Has anyone used the AutoMeter dash bezel for their guages? Any pics?
Is there a certain "series" of AutoMeter guages that would look/work the best?
Thanx in advance for your help (I know how ya'll like to spend other people's money ).

Doug

i'm in the process of doing a 3 gauge pillar for my SD with gaffrig 270 degree electric gauges (very accurate, and dependable) they have the same sweep as mechanical gauges, without the hassle of the tubes. i'll keep you posted as i get things together.

guages ???

I have the A-pillar double gauge, From pictures of the bezel type, it looked to me that it would block parts of the dash, and I just like the looks of the A pillar better. There are pics in my gallery and I know a bunch of others have them as well as the bezel tye.

Usually, I always use mechanical guages, but for my tranny temp guage, I did go with a electric type for the ease of it. Seems to work great so far.

As far as the series, your choice, all auto meters are pretty good, I went with the white faced ultra lights, more or less to match my white guage cluster. I was going to go with liquid filled gauges only because I have a shelf full for our race cars, but was affraid of possible freezing issues in the winter.

Im sure more of the guys will chime in with their setups.

my opinion would be to do the gauges somewhere other than the a-pillar and save that for a new handle..... since you are not running a PSD, the gauges are not as important to be front and center.

Well, I am old and fat, and my wife is short - so the handle has to stay. That's why I'm looking at the bezel.

You can put a handle on the drivers side? Are there holes there or do you have to drill your own. I'm young and getting fat and I don't wanna push on the door or pull on the wheel. Tell me more!!!

the drivers side a-pillar handle is the best thing i think i have done to my truck.... it makes getting in 100% easier (even if she wasn't jacked it would be a big boon!).

anyhow..... this is what i did.

got the handle and the hardware from my local ford dealer. be sure to request the hardware (screws) and screw hole caps as they do not come with the handle. total price was around $25. you will also have to get four speed nuts as they do not come with the ford hardware.

i have a friend that has a body shop and he did the work for me (cost was a couple of beers and a burger).... but i did help him do the work and it was nice to have the tools he had in his shop.....

- pull off the pass side handle
- measured the trim panel's holes
- pull the driver's side trim panel
- mark off handle holes from measurements on pass side
- cut out the holes on the drivers side trim panel
- place trim panel back up and push the handle into place
- mark off the bolt holes for the a-pillar thru the handle
- pull off trim panel and drill holes
- put in the speed nuts
- put the trim panel back on
- screw in the handle

took us about an hour to complete the job and the handle is nice and sturdy.

i figure if i had done this at home, it would have taken me a tad over two hours with a dremel tool and a drill.

good luck!

there is a pic of the finished job in my gallery

I just got my autometer temp gauge installed this a.m wasnt too difficult, i used the cup mount kit, you can get from summit that allows it to hang under or on top of your dash.. anyway i mounted under the dash right beside the trailer brake controller, between the 4x4 manual shifter and the trash bag hook, i like it down there , both my instruments for towing right down there easy to see, but not too obvious.....

You can probably get the new left pillar trim and grab handle out of a 2003 Lariat (if the trim matches). Mine came that way.
