I'm new here, so if I'm asking a redundant question, I apologize. Here it is- I have a 2000 F-150 4x4 w/ the off-road package. A few days ago the digital thermometer went to 140 F (Celsius reads 60 degrees) and has stayed there since. The compass is fine. I looked in the manual and found nothing about this. I had it at the dealer to get touch up paint and the parts guy said there should be some kind of reset button. Can't find one. A service guy said he'd have to look at it, but I'd rather fix it myself than pay for it. I disconnected the battery for a few minutes, hoping to reset it, but nothing reset (not even the radio preset buttons). Suggestions?
If the outside air temperature sensor is short or open circuited, then the display will show 60°C (140°F) or -40°C (-40°F) respectively in place of temperature.
I think I would start by checking the connections and wiring at the back of the unit and at the temperature sensor which is under the black cover that goes from the grill to the radiator.
You could also disconnect the sensor and see if the thermometer goes to -40. If it does I'd say your wiring is ok and the sensor is shot.
