My Truck - 1979 Ford F-150 - is acting up - my engine "tick" (as reported in an earlier posting), which I thought was in the valves, has now evolved into a "growl" type noise and I think it may be a main as the motor is putting oil out through the dip stick tube, around the PCV valve and the oil breather - real messy!
Funny part is I had the main re-built - new crank, bearings, timing gears and chain about 4 years ago.
It gets regular oil changes with Quality Oil - Valvoline - and new filters and PCV valve.
What is wrong with this 302??? HELP!
Thanks in advance.
Cheers!
Alex
Might be a loose valve cover? or the gasket is shot? My buddies 302 in his stang made a growling noise...it was the gaskets. also maybe u have a header leak?
Yeah - the valve covers are leaking a bit, but I tightened them down, though they are still leaking. Maybe I'll try replacing them first and see what happens. I don't think the exhaust manifold is leaking, but I will double check it.
Thanks.
If oil's coming up through the dip tube, and leaking around the PCV and breather grommets, sounds more like blow-by. You might want to run a compression check on that motor to see what kind of shape that motor's in.
Thanks for the input Guys!
I am going to try replacing the valve cover gaskets and see what happens. It was after I snugged the covers down that the oil spewing got worse.
As for blow-by, that is a possibility - though the motor is fairly decent - lots of power and only 159,000 K.M.'s on it. Bottom end was rebuilt around 114,000 k.m.'s. Compression check is a good idea.
Thanks again!
