Need help,what motor
I'm thinking of selling my 05 fx4 and buying something new. I know what truck i want but My problem is that I don't know what to get motor wise. I use my tuck for hauling my boat, quads,sleds and car trailer. Basically every time it's used I have at least 3000 to 8500lbs behind it. Need some input from you guys on what I should look for. The ecoboost makes me a little nervous due to long term reliability. Not sure how those turbos will be in 5- 8 years. I like the 6.2 but what kind of mileage can I expect. Close to my 5.4? 5.0 seems small but maybe it's ok. Damn trucks cost so much just don't want to make a bad choice. To many options these days. Need some honest opinions.

If I could figure out how to get a pic from my phone to this forum I'd show you my 5.0 towing my 8,000 lb. Bandit 254 last week. No WD hitch, no mods to truck, just a pintle hitch pulling the chipper. Went 60 miles, fuel page showed 15.2 mpg for the relatively flat trip on MA rt. 2.

The EcoBoost is a science project, no way around that. While I have faith in its long-term reliability I still can't make sense of the maze under the hood. Being the geek that I am I had to go with the EcoBoost, but I would have no qualms whatsoever with a 5.0L truck for your use.
I can't imagine a situation that would make me want the 6.2L engine. Nothing against it, but fuel economy is important to me and the Ti-VCT engines have a really great torque curve and deliver much better fuel economy. Just my opinion though, your mileage may vary.

I'd get the 5.0. The eco boost has the power to tow what you want but fuel mileage drops off fast when towing. The 6.2 is a beast, but fuel economy is dismal compaired to the other engines and depending on the model of truck you want it might not be avaliable.

6.2L optional in F150 Lariat & Platinum only with Max Tow Package only. Standard equipment in Harley-Davidson and Raptor.
Prior to Escape in sig: 2011 F150 Lariat Stupor Crew 2WD 5.0L (standard equipment), Lariat Plus Package and other misc options I can't recall. MSRP: $39,990.00.
I can just imagine what the MSRP woulda been with 6.2L & Max Tow.
Cheapskate Ford makes you pay extra for a bedliner on all F150's, except Raptor and there's no drivers grab handle available period.
Running boards IMO don't help much, when there's nothing to grab onto when stepping up into these high beasts, except the steering wheel.

In a FX4 it is $3490 upcharge over the 5.0 and $2490 over the Ecoboost.
In a Lariat it is a $4245 upcharge over the 5.0 and $3150 over the Ecoboost.

I would like to see if the new 6.2 gets about the same mpg As my old 5.4. If it does I would get the extra jam of the 6.2. Heard the ecoboost really falls hard in the mpg repo when towing. Might have to see if I can test a few trucks with different motors while towing.

For towing, the Ecoboost is going to behave better than either the 5.0 or the 6.2 thanks to the forced induction. Many people have called it a "mini diesel" due to this characteristic. You'll find that not having to run your motor up to 5K to pull hills (as the 5.4 is known for) is nice.
The 6.2 is a great motor if you have nothing better to do with your money than pay for fuel.
If you're towing 100% of the time, you should also consider the max payload and max towing packages. The extra GVWR headroom and stability would be perfect for you.

Any of those motors will serve you well for what you want to tow. It all comes down to personal prefence ant cost. You didn't say how many miles you put on your truck, but with gas prices these days. I would go with the 5.0 or Ecoboost my self. With 5 mpg better with the Ecoboost and 3 mpg better on the 5.0 then the 6.2. That starts to add up over the long run plus the extra cost of the 6.2. JMHO.
Don't count out the Ecoboost I love mine awesome power and TQ curve. Ford worked out the kinks of the Ecoboost after 2011 models.
