I need some help here folks..have 82 F250, auto. speedo is driving me crazy...spent $1200 on new tranny and then the speedo started bouncing on a cross state trip, at end of trip, no movement. took the cable out of tranny and nylon gear was fried, had it looked at by repair shop and they said the gear on the transmission tail shaft was gone too. So, they replaced it...worked for about a month, and now it's fried again. Why is this happening? I put new cables on too. Damn cruise works off the cable and now I don't have that either. Is there anyway to set up an electronic speedo on this contraption? Any help would sure be appreciated. Thanks
That's EXACTLY why I ditched my original speedo! Unfortunately, to put in an OE '92-96 PSOM, you also have to change the rear axle to an '87-96 8.8" to get the ABS sensor that sends the signal to the PSOM. You also have to change to the electronic cruise servo or you'll still need the plastic gears to run the old vacuum cruise system. That's an easy upgrade once you have the ABS sensor.
You can see what it looks like in my signature link.
AFAIK there are certain nylon gear combinations that work with specific tailshaft gears. If the transmission shop put in the wrong tailshaft it would chew up your nylon gear. Check with the Ford dealership or an actual speedometer shop for the proper gear combination. Do you still have your original chewed up gear?
