2003 Escape - no back up lights

2003 Escape - no back up lights
We've checked fuses and bulbs and they are all ok. I'm assuming it's the neutral safety switch. How difficult is that to check/replace? Do I really have to dump all the engine coolant and go under the hood or can I go into the column?
