75 l6 4x4

I've obtained a cheap 75 f250 highboy and don't know what to do with it. I didn't expect a 6 cyl but now that I have it I'd like to know the good, bad and the ugly. Is it reliable? Decent power? Are there any simple mods to make it better? I'd like to use it to mob up in the back country so am I gonna be able to run bigger tires on it? Any ideas are welcomed.

Great engine, pretty decent low end torque, but not much for top end. They are extremely reliable and are argued as one of the most reliable engines ever made. The only real problem with the 300 I6 is it's not a V8

Stock 300s had a 1 barrel carb. You can buy aftermarket manifolds for two and four barrel carbs.

Here's my 74 with 4.10s and 36s in the back country

Headers, cam, intake and carb. For what it's worth, I found that the Autolite 2150 was nearly as good as the Holley 390, and much easier to tune.

That is my favorite photo of a 300. I removed a 390 from my truck and replaced it with a modified 300. I beefed up the 300 and got equal the hp, and 50% better mpg. I take the family to baja with the boat, camper, and tons of goodies, and have never missed the 390.

Where you want to spend the $ is in the head: a good porting and installation of over size valves is the trick. Check Clifford performance dot com., or do some searches in the inline forum. Enjoy. k

Good info. Thanks all. I've waited quite awhile for this truck. Pretty stoked now.

I love my 300 6 cylinder. Here's mine in my 66 F100 short bed, 300 6 with mild cam, Pertronix ignition module and coil, Offenhauser dual plane intake, Edelbrock 500 cfm 4 bbl carb, split exhaust manifolds from a newer fuel injected 300 6, dual exhaust run through flow masters and exit out the back, great performance and everyone thought I had a V8

PS: DON'T use a Holley 390cfm, That's what I started with and it was a pain in the azz, never did get it to work properly even after dumping tons of money into it, then just bought the edelbrock carb, bolted it on and was good to go, worked great right out of the box!

I agree. I love my 300 too. I tried an Eddy carb, and it worked great, and supplied stupendous performance, but I thought the mpg sucked, so I changed to a Quadrajet.

Here is a shot of mine. BTW, another thrill of having an I6 is the 'bling' factor. Everyone in the world has a v8. When I open my hood people crowd around. One guy at the autoparts, when I was changing a filter in the parking lot, said: 'man! that thing is the tit.'

Here is a shot of mine:

Of course now I have a new aluminum cross flow radiator, and hydro boost brakes with a late model chevy master cylinder.

If you want the 300 to perform, spend the money on the head. That is the bottle neck of these engines.

How are you guys lifting this truck? Most of the lifts I see come with springs up front. What's the deal there?

I lifted mine by converting it to 4wd and using a combo of F150 and F250 parts. First, what size tires are you looking to run? In my opinion, a good tradeoff ratio for the 300 is something like as follows:
3.55s with 31s
3.73s with 33s
4.10s with 36s

That sure is a purdy engine. I love the blue down in the valleys on the valve cover.

Arguably the best motor Ford ever produced...tons of low end torque, 17-19 mpg, good for 250-300K miles between rebuilds.

It's like a diesel masquerading as a gas engine.
