gear problems

ok, im going from 5.37 gears to 4.10 gears. i have 77 f250 with dana 44 up front and dana 60 in back. i have the front done all ready and i went to do the back and when i took the ring gear off a 3/16 spacer came with it. i was told to use everything from the old on the new to have a starting point. everyone i have talked to has never heard of a spacer for the ring gear. when i put it all together and started tightening the gears bound up and would turn. i was wondering if i should take the spacer off and try that.just wondering if anyone here has heard of a spacer like this and what it would be there for. thanx

gear problems

First off look at your pinions. The one from the 5.37 gears is tiny compared to the 4.10 pinion. That spacer was to move the ring gear closer to the pinion because you can only shim the carrier over so far. It may be too much for your 4.10 gears. I would try to put it together without the spacer and see how it goes.

Do you understand what I'm saying? If not let me know and I'll try to be more specific.

yes i understand what you are saying, but the other thing is that the pinion might be bigger but my ring gear is thinner than the 5.37. i have taken out the spacer and i have also now taken out all the shims on the pinion, and when i torque the housing down nothing will move, so i think i need to start adding shims to the housing to get the ring gear further from the pinion, also now that i have removed all the shims on the pinion, when i torque the pinion nut down, the pinion gear is very hard to turn, any reason for this, i dont see anything binding up on it, thanx guys for all your help
