Steve McQueen was the best! He should serve as a role model for all of the "so called" hollywood tough guys. For example the current car movie out 2fast2furious. What a crock of crap. First of all alot of the action was CGI. The driving was all special effects.
What happened to the days of Bullitt and the lesser known motorcycle scene in the Great Escape. Steve McQueen did all of the driving and stunts, including the jump over the barbwire fence on the motorcycle. It's a sad time in hollywood when the stars care more about being pretty then authentic.
Even the Blues Brothers had a better car chase scene then all of 2fast2furious and it's prequal put together.
How about the original Gone in 60 seconds where the guy did all his own stunt driving, and got all his buddies for actors. I don't think there were any professional actors in the movie. And it was way cool, especially the way they left the "accidents" in the movie, like where he hit the light pole at 60+ mph.
Well said,I would watch the Blues Brothers anyday before I go see 2F2F...That show is crap...All the CG'S and all ,They just wanna be pretty boys..Then they get all these stupid *** rappers in it,who couldn't drive a Bike any better than a car...
I met Steve McQueen back in 1980. We were both student pilot's at Santa Paula Airport. He was taking his training in his own Boeing PT-17 pilot trainer. One day he saw me eyeballing his plane and gave me a complete walk-around tour of it. He seemed like a regular guy. He was ill at the time, and died not too long afterward.
I also am a huge fan of Steve McQueen. Thought he was great in Papillion, The Sand Pebbles and The Getaway.
However, he did not do the barbed wire jump in The Great Escape. His friend, stuntman Bud Elkins, actually performed the stunt for that movie. Steve did the rest of the riding, as that was the only way he would make the movie. It seems that he wanted to show off his motorcycle skills!
I think that the Fast and the what ever is a joke it shows that strret racers are all thugs and that anyone with a civic and a fart tip can race. i live in meduim size town where you cant drive through an intersection an dnoe she one. It makes anyone with a decal and screwdriver a gearhead. I think Movies like Bullit and Black Cat run and even Vanishing point are all classics with AMERICAN Motor powerd vechiles Detriot Steel not 1300 cc lawnmowers . They all had full sized cars not sport Compact
Wow! That's cool horsepuller, meeting Steve McQueen.
I was reading an article about him awhile back in it said that he once turned down a movie roll so he could compete in an off road race or he'd schedule his movie rolls to allow him to compete during the racing season, something like that. I know he liked racing dirt bikes in the desert among other types of racing. He also had an old Indian motorcycle. There was a picture of it in the article.
One of my favorite movies with Steve McQueen is Navada Smith.
I agree that Steve McQueen is great. Speaking of songs about him, I think everyone should hear "Steve McQueen" by The Drive-By Truckers. It's pretty funny.
