I have an 86 F250 with the Dana 44 IFS hd front axle and it keeps eating up the drivers side lockout! Back in April I noticed that it wouldn't engage when I put it in 4x4 so I jacked the tire up and noticed that the wheel bearing was loose and that the original Ford lockout was chewed up! I then thought that the loose wheel bearing was the culprit and bought a new set of High Dollar Warn Lockouts for it. I since have used the 4x4 two or three times. Today I noticed (when I needed it) that that lockout would not engage again! I took it apart again and the wheel bearing was tight but the lockout was shot and the brass bearing in it was all chewed up! What could be the problem? I cannot afford to put a new lockout in it every few months! It appears that the axle shaft has alot of play in it. What does the outer axle end ride on? The u-joints are in good shape and everything appears tight. Any Ideas?
The outer end of the axle stub shaft is supported by the bearing inside the hub lock. It sounds like the INNER stub shaft bearing (inside the spindle) is bad - have you ever replaced or packed it?
actually I did not know it even existed until I was just now looking through my chiltons manual at an exploded view! Is this a part I can get at the auto parts store? Thanks
