I did the major tune up last week. New Valve set, Cap & Rotor, Excell Hi-Po Wires and Platinum +4 Plugs. Truck seemed to run much better but after a tank of gas it started knocking & pinging on hard load conditions. I pulled the codes and got (23) Throttle Position Sensor out of range and (31) EGR Valve Control Sensor Fault. (31) EVAP Control System below minimum voltage. The codes came up in a different way than I'm used to but it's the first time that I've pulled them from this B II (84 2.8 Auto). The codes read 23-23---1---31-31, KOEO. I never was able to pull any KEOR codes because I haven't been able to send code 11 or 111 to clear system!!! Do any of you Bluebloods have any tips for me? My 'POS' Haynes Manual is about as specific as "The HitchHikers Guide to the Galaxy". I swear my next truck is going to be an old little Bronco. [ No Computers ]

The DIY manuals are not very good when it comes to the computer diagnosis. They just don't have enough pages to cover it thoroughly. If you're up to some light reading, I'd recommend a trip to the library. Many times you can find the Motor or Mitchell manuals that cover your year and will include a complete list of code testing procedures as well as "pin-point" tests for each code to diagnose the system properly. They are often in the reference section of the library, so they can't be checked out, but you can make photocopies.
Among things to check will be the wiring from the sensor to the computer, make sure it's all intact. If your Haynes manual doesn't have one, there's a page in the vehicle repair guides at www.autozone.com that describe how to test the TPS for proper operation.
The Chilton's manual does a better job of explaining the code. I remeber when my 85 still had TFI, it would repeate the same codes over and over. Pull the battery cable for 10-15 min to clear the computer codes.
