Last fall My 85 F-250 lost power suddenly and died while pulling our 5th wheel trailer. I pulled it home and it has sat until this evening. I pulled the distributor cap and the rotor does not turn when the engine is cranked. I took the oil filler cap off and the cam seems to be turning as I can see at least one rocker arm moving as the engine is cranked. Now to my question-how difficult is it to re- orient the distributor after I pull it? Is it likely that I have a sheared pin holding the gear to the shaft or something more serious? Thanks,
I'd say you either have a sheared roll pin in the distributor shaft, or a chewed up distributor gear...as these are the only two things that can think of that would cause the rotor not to spin when the engine is cranking.
I'd put a socket on the harmonic balancer and roll the engine over until it was on TDC, either by the timing marks if your balancer's outer ring hasn't slipped, or either by having a friend place their finger tightly over the #1 sparkplug hole and rotate the engine until they feel their finger getting blown off the cyl... that would approximate TDC #1 cyl.
