Hello!
Today I dropped the transmission pan, replaces the gasket and filter, but didnt fill the fluid back up yet. But I have a stupid question, the pan had a leak because of a bad gasket, and pretty much leaked all of the fluid, so when i replaced the gasket, there wasnt that much fluid I had to drain, but when i did it, i only dropped the pan, because of this is there lots of fluids left in the tranny? or was just dropping the pan and letting sit for like 30mins good enough?
It really depends upon how long the pan has been leaking. There are usually several pints still held in the torque converter if you just drop the pan and drain what is there. However, if it has been leaking long enough while the engine was running, the pump will keep pushing fluid through the transmission until there is none left. the fact that there was still some in the pan is a good sign. If the pan had been empty, chances are more likely that the lack of fluid will have cavitated the pump and/or killed the forward clutches. Just went through this with my father's Grand Marquis. He ran over something that poked a hole in the pan. He drove it dry. Shop replaced the pan, 1-2 shift solenoid and the fluid. He drove it a day before the forward clutches failed.
I let it sit for a while, so I hope I'm good. Hopefully our landlord will be happy that its not leaking tranny fluid everywhere anymore (hopefully lol) . But I'm sure he doesnt like the probably 10qt thats stained on the driveway .
When you remove the pan there will only be 8qts. in there, but the trans can hold up to 18qts, so there is still a lot of ATF in the transmission, for a proper refilling procedure check the final part of this write-up: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post13059337
