Question Camera Suggestions

In 2 months my g/f and her family are going on vacation in Germany. She wants a new digital camera for under $100. I suggested this one;

Amazon.com: Canon PowerShot SX150 IS 14.1 MP Digital Camera with 12x Wide-Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom with 3.0-Inch LCD (Black): CANON: Camera & Photo Amazon.com: Canon PowerShot SX150 IS 14.1 MP Digital Camera with 12x Wide-Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom with 3.0-Inch LCD (Black): CANON: Camera & Photo

Opinions on this one or any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Canon puts out a decent camera - I've not used that particular model, but I have used other models and was happy with them.

I'm also in the market for a good cam, under $200, more if its something that will last me 10 years or so. I've looked at the GoPro video cams but that's a bit of overkill for snap shots of underneath my truck I think.

Interested to see what suggestions are made here.

+1!

Their return policies are great and I've used it a few times for defective or things that didn't work as I hoped they would.

Great site, free shipping if you go over $25 too!

We have one of these, works well. Very limited zoom, so that's not so good for the scenery pics.

My worry is the batteries. I suggested to her to use rechargeable. What are you using? How are the pictures at close up shots? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Some cameras don't like to use rechargeable batteries (my little Kodak is like that) - you might want to look at the user's manual and see what it says to use...

I e-mailed Canon with this Q? and they suggested a rechargeable battery rated no less than 1700 mAh.

I would agree. The higher the mAh the better, and keep some spares handy. Of course you can also use disposable batteries in a pinch. We have broken a lot of cameras at work. Canon's seem to hold up the best. We mostly use rechargeable batteries, but the disposables get used some times too.

Most of the newer cameras have an auto focus that will do just fine on the close up shots. If you hold the button down just a little it will focus and you will see a flower looking icon appear. That indicates it's in the close up mode. If you're not happy with that, there is a button that has the same flower looking thing that lets you manually switch it to the close up mode.

Have her buy several memory cards or take something so she can download pictures off the card so she doesn't run out of room.
