I'll be 29 this year, and have been driving the same truck since I was 15. Yes, it was my first. It is an 81' F-100 with the 300 straight six. C4 auto, 9 inch rear end. Her name is Earlene, my Dad named her when he bought her new in 82'. This was the family vehicle for us growing up. I've treated her well and in turn she has treated me well. It's sitting on 354,000 miles and before this past Tuesday, all she ever asked for was a new carburetor.
After thirty two years of faithful service, she blew a head gasket on the way home from work Tuesday afternoon. To some this would be the end of the road, but for this truck, it's only just begun. I do believe the time has come...for a rebuild. I've contacted machine shops, spoken with Ford reps, pondered estimates, and conjured with gurus from all corners. This old workhorse ain't ready for the pasture just yet.
Sounds like a labor of love! We have the resources and folks that can help...go to the main forum page and scroll down until you find the Explorer section that is specific to your '81, and post up there...you will get help . Welcome to FTE.
