I'm gonna try to get a head start on this so I don't end up stranding myself somewhere!! When I'm driving, the amperes gauge reads low and below the 'N'. Also, when I'm braking, the red battery light in the dash keeps flickering, BUT only when I'm stopped and braking. Do I need a new alternator?
check the plug on the back of the alternator before you throw one on it, mine was doing pretty much the same thing, ended up finding that connector had to be held a certain way from to many time leaning on it under the hood, replaced the pigtail and its been fine ever since. id check that before doing an alternator, wouldnt hurt to have it tested though
If you have a multimeter, set it to 20V DC. Place the black lead to the negitive post on the battery, and touch the red lead to the stud with the large red wire on the back of the alt. With the engine off you should get the same voltage as the batteries. With the engine running after the glow plugs shut off, you should get at least 13.5 volts from the alt. If wiggleing the plug on top of the alt makes the volts increase, the pigtail is probably bad. BE VERY CAREFUL OF THE FAN BELT!
like farmert said use a multimeter while playing with it if it charges when you mess with it there is a loose connection if you need one this, im pretty sure this is the one that fits Ford Alternator Pigtail 1996+ Gray Housing - The Repair Connector Store havent looked at my truck to verify thats right
just got the alternator tested and it was bad. Just replaced it with a new 130 amp alt and it s back to normal, man, spending money is great... i wish it would've been that connector!
