Cleaning a door panel...
I picked up a set of door panels for my '84 f-150 from someone on craigslist. They are black and have an appearance that is best described as if someone waxed the door panels and it chalked up and they never removed it. I tried using solvent cleaners with no luck removing this 'whatever you want to call it'.
I'm reluctant to try acetone or lacquer thinner as they'll probably eat the plastic.
I tried mineral spirits, denatured alcohol, goo-gone and soap/water with no luck. My next trick is to try wax/adhesive remover but if that doesn't work does anyone else have a suggestion on a suitable product that won't eat the plastic? I don't want to paint the door panels either as the paint they claim is a dye never seems to work right for me and only scratches off too easy for my liking. The factory plastic panels are dyed all the way thru so how can a spray applied dye not scratch off?
Anyway, any input is much appreciated. Using my best judgement, this is definitely something on the surface not dry rot or fading.
Thanks,
Al C.
