Wheel Question

I have a 1971 Ford F-250 Sport Custom Camper Special. It is a 2wd rig with the original 16.5 inch wheels. I want to get new wheels, whether on craigslist or discount, just anywhere because 16.5 tires are hard to find. Does anyone know the bolt pattern for these rigs? Thanks for any help!

8 × 6 1/2.

You can use later model 8 lug rims that are 16" and easy to find up until 1999.

I still found 16.5 at Firestone dealer. I went that route.

i went to the junkyard and found the wheels Area351 mentioned. Look for 83-99 trucks or 83-2010 econoline vans. i dug through a pile of wheels for some. the Ford wheels will have "acuuride" stamped on them. Dodge & Chevy had the same bolt pattern during some of those years. I use a 16 by 7 inch set. The size is stamped on the rim.

one thing to look at is the diameter of the tires...16" tires will need to be on the larger size(245/70-16 is what I have on my special) so the speedo reads proper speed.

Ford and Dodge interchange, but Chevy has a smaller hub bore hole and may not fit if your truck is 4WD.

All Ford trucks up to 99 are 8 x 6 1/2. They then went to 8 x 170mm.

Close but no cigar.

Or there is a tool on the net where you can give it a known tire size and experiment with different sizes untill you figure out a different size that has the same (or close enough) diameter, rolling distance , percentage of difference, new speed where-as original tire size was doing 60MPH, etc. Go to www.miata.com. (yeah I know, Mazda, Yuck) Yes, it does truck sizes.

You can also change the speedo gear on the end of the cable that goes into the transmission or transfer case and run any size tire you want and still have an accurate speedometer..

16.5 tires are obsolete and getting harder to find and are much more expensive .

1953/98 F250's & 1967/98 F350's have 8 lug wheels on a 6.50" bolt circle as do 1969/74 E300's & 1975/2013 E250/350's.

F250/350's went to metric wheels in 1999, but no Econoline has metric wheels.

Be careful about aluminum or other alloy rims. I had a set I was going to put on my truck years ago but the lug studs weren't long enough to compensate for the added thickness of the rim.

That's a simple fix: put longer studs in.

When use aluminum rims with the long studs (Not acorn) make sure you get the washers that go with them. The washers keep the aluminum from getting tore up and can be hard to find. Must be a correct fit for the stud and the rim.

I have never seen an aluminum rim that uses standard acorn nuts use a washer.

The only ones I have seen that use a washer also use a special nut that fits inside the hole where the stud goes.

Just using acorn as an example. The special long nut needs the correct size washer to fit on it. I lost one once and had a hard time finding one that fit correctly. Sorry, should have been more clear.
