No Start

Well I've been dealing with this for a week, my truck wont start or even try. I know someones going to comment the obviose, but i checked everything, just cleaned my gas tank, new fuel lines, getting fuel, getting spark, new points coil, plugs, gaped everything, new fuel pump, rebuilt caruburator, and timing almost perfect, no vaccume leaks, and if i shine a flashlight down the carb and pump it I can see fuel going in. It will crank and crank real strong but never catches or starts or anything

it might be flooded to bad to start. pull one of the plugs out and see if you can smell gas, or if it is wet. I have had to remove all the plugs and use a small torch to burn the excess gas out of the cylanders. be very carefull when you do this as it could send fire back up thru the carb.

I'm curious how you know timing is near perfect without the engine running? But I would suggest pulling the cap off and making sure the distributor is turning with the starter. Have somebody turn the key while you watch the rotor. If the timing chain went bad the distributor won't move or has slipped to the wrong spot in relation to the crank.

Im not sure if you can do this with these old Fe's but on my friends gm 305 the distributor was 180* off. So when it was at tdc on piston 1 it was firing on 6 instead if 1. You'll have to ask someone else on here if thats possible with these engines.

Good luck

Yes 180 out is possible. Is the firing order correct. How was it running before you did all the work. Did it just quit or just would not start one day.

If you have the old style ign. switch it could be bad. When mine went out it would crank but would not start. The old round terminal style switches are know to go bad.

Long story, but basicly it would Idle fine so I could do things like fine tune the timing and stuff, but when I went to drive it around it would start starving for fuel and I know that was the problem because I have a clear in-line filter and it was empty even though my fuel pump is good. figure out that one; and I did try that and with the distributer cap off the roter turns.

It ran fine at an idle to where i could fine tune it, then I would get into 2nd or third gear and it would starve for fuel, so I had my carb rebuilt and now it wont start. Ok maybe its the ignition.. i dont know anything about those or how to check them or anything.

The ign switch has a plug behind the dash that comes apart. Once apart you can see if you have spade or round type connectors.

If you have not changed condenser that might be giving you problems.

When I get stuck I go back and visually check everything. Make sure gnd.s and battery cables are good. If you have a meter check voltage at battery and coil. (coil should be around 8 to 9 volts) Check to make sure your firing order is correct. Check points to make sure they are gaped correctly. Disconnect spark plug wire put in another plug then gnd. and crank engine to make sure you have a good spark.

If certain it's a fuel problem look into the carb with the engine off pump the throttle see if you get any fuel. If not disconnect fuel line from carb put it in a jar, disconnect the coil wire crank engine see if you get any fuel. If do could be a carb problem if no fuel you need to work from carb to tank to see where the problem is. Just cause pump is new does not mean it's working. I had a fuel pump from napa go out in a month.

If you have an automatic you could check the vacuum line for leaks/disconnection at tran.s.
