Without towing you can get away with stock sometimes. Once you get it hot by towing all bets are off. Do it right or sell it. IMO
I totally disagree. I pull a 31' 5er thru the eastern sierras four times a summer. Climb temps out of Bishop pushing 100 degrees. I am totally stock except for coolant and p.s. filters and have never had a problem. I can set the cruise at 60 mph up the 395 and sit there till I reach McGees creek.

It will self destruct if it gets too hot. You are taking a chance.. At least get a coolant temp alarm so you can pull over and let it cool. You are the exception.

He's got a Scangauge, so I'm gonna guess that he's monitoring temps. Just like any other vehicle, it will self destruct if it gets too hot, even with all of the mods.

Its the egr that causes most of the issues. The engine is tuned for emissions which causes the coolant to flash which the 6.0 doesn't like. An egr delete really helps as does an increase in exhaust size from the turbo back. Also with the right tuner the engine runs better and gets better mileage.

I have no doubt that it runs better with a good tuner. I did the mods because I had to tear into it to fix an HPO leak anyway, so I figured it was a great time to fix the shortcomings and crank up the power. That said, when it was stock, I never saw coolant temps above 220 and oil above 230 while towing a loaded 35' toy hauler up some pretty nice grades. Yes, the mods give you an extra safety margin, but that doesn't mean you're on borrowed time without them. You would be wise to pay attention to temps especially while towing, modded or otherwise, but you don't need to dump a few grand into a good stock truck just so you can do some towing.
